Bring out your inner chef at the best cooking classes in Adelaide

  • Instructor - The instructor should have good certifications (such as Food Handling Certificate and Certificate in Training and Assessment) and experience (at least five years).
  • Class set-up - The class atmosphere, size, and schedule should make learning accessible and easy.
  • Fairness of rates - The rates should be reasonable considering the length and complexity of the classes.
  • Cooking styles taught - They should have many courses accommodating different dietary preferences and cuisines.

I’ve always been a huge fan of cooking shows like Hell’s Kitchen and MasterChef. I’ve picked up plenty of cooking tips along the way. But the catch is I never actually learned to cook!

While I may not have the fancy kitchens these shows feature, I know the humble one I have at home can still whip up some mean dishes.

So when I finally had some free time, I jumped at the chance to join a cooking class. Now I’ve perfected my meat pie recipe!

If you’re in Adelaide and want to take a cooking class, check out the best ones here!

I recommend the Weber Grill Academy for anyone looking to master barbecuing. They excel in teaching barbecuing skills and food preparation techniques.

They have a structured program divided into three levels based on complexity. These contain sub-levels for those who want to specialize in American barbecue, barbecuing for festivities, and more, making their lessons compatible with many learners.

All of their instructors are also experienced, having decades of hands-on and teaching experience (some come from international restaurants!).

They use top-notch cooking equipment, including the latest Weber Q range, all set up on a 120 m² all-weather balcony for easy lessons. The school also has a lovely alfresco area overlooking Victoria Park and the CBD.

In terms of downsides, however, their cooking classes are limited to barbecuing. Also, their max class size of 20 can be overwhelming for some.

Pros

  • Good for learning all types of barbecuing
  • Program has three levels of complexity
  • Experienced instructors
  • Top-notch equipment and facilities

Cons

  • Limited to barbecuing
  • Max class size is 20

We had the best night, learnt so much

“Tal and Tarn were awesome! We had the best night, learnt so much, met great people, ate the most amazing food all cooked on the Weber Q (by us!). So much fun. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend it. I bought this for my fiancé for his birthday. Great night out! Thank You 🙏🏻”

Scoffed Cooking School is made for learners of all ages, starting from 6 and beyond.

It was founded by Mark Busse in 2015 to offer fun and informative cooking classes. I think they’ve done this well with their laid-back yet effective approach to cooking.

In addition, they have classes with various topics from main courses to desserts and from local cuisines to international ones. These are structured to be friendly for both one-time attendees and regular ones too.

Their group sessions are executed effortlessly, as their staff are experienced and flexible in handling any age group. It makes them especially good for birthday parties or corporate events.

That said, a minor downside is that they’ve received some complaints for having faulty equipment. Also, some found their courses a bit too simple.

Pros

  • Good for all ages
  • Laid-back yet effective classes
  • Courses have a good variation
  • Recommendable for group learning sessions

Cons

  • Sometimes has faulty kitchen equipment
  • Courses may be a bit too simple

Super easy to deal with

“We celebrated my daughter’s 8th birthday at Scoffed CS and absolutely loved it. They were super easy to deal with, the kids had a great time, it was all taken care of so parents just took a couple of hours to chat and relax. Great food and even serve a range of drinks for the adults :)”

The setup at Scoffed is great

“I attended the Low&Slow class. The setup at Scoffed is great. Tom and Mark gave us lots of tips on charcoal cooking in Webers.

There were hands-on components where we made cornbread, chicken wings and BBQ sauce.

We had brisket and rib trimming demonstrations and Tom’s passion for BBQ and his experience in the competitive circuit was very valuable.

Thanks Nadine for being a great host for the night. Five stars for the experience, and I’ll be keeping my eye on other courses at Scoffed!”

Sticky Rice Cooking School is for those who want to cook international dishes and get to know the culture these dishes come from. They provide themed accommodation too, which piqued my interest.

The school was founded by Claire Fuller in 2008 to be a space where learners can appreciate the technical and cultural aspects of international food. Some of the countries she’s inspired by include Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and more.

She does this successfully, as I saw during our Japanese cuisine lesson. There, she shared the inspiration behind the dishes, the local events they’re typically served at, and more.

The Japanese-inspired architecture of the accommodation, which came bundled with the cooking classes, added to the immersive experience of the cooking lessons.

Compared to other cooking schools, however, their overall rates are pricey. I wouldn’t recommend them if you’re looking for very short courses, as theirs are best enjoyed over a full day.

Pros

  • Emphasizes cultural learning
  • Good variety of courses
  • Also provides accommodation
  • Has comprehensive packages

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Courses are long (can take a full day)

The recipes were explained in detail

“I attended two cooking classes with Yukiko and Daniel and had a wonderful time at both classes. The recipes were explained in detail and plenty of opportunity to get hands on. My main reason for going to an Asian style cooking school was to learn more about blending the different sauces and what dishes they were best used in and this was covered extremely well. The other people attending the classes were great fun and really good company. I would highly recommend these classes.”

Genevieve was excellent, very easy to understand & she was ever so helpful, it made my afternoon so pleasant. Our food was amazing and very tasty. Loved it, highly recommend this from Chris.”

Homefresh Experience Cooking is notable for providing lessons to children on the autism spectrum or with special needs. They have classes made especially for NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme)-recipients.

The school was founded in 2012 by Stephen Curtis to provide cooking classes for everyone. They have classes for young children, teens, singles, couples, corporate groups, and more.

I also appreciate how friendly their chefs are and how smoothly they conduct the classes. Most of them have decades of experience working for restaurants, evident in their fast responses to questions and flexibility in teaching different people.

In addition, I have no complaints about their cooking equipment and facilities, as they’re well-maintained and updated.

In terms of downsides, however, a minor one is that their location in Port Adelaide may be a bit too far for those from the CBD and South Adelaide. In addition, their classes tend to fill up quickly.

Pros

  • Can provide lessons for children with special needs
  • Accommodates learners of all ages
  • Friendly and experienced chefs
  • Well-maintained cooking equipment and facilities

Cons

  • Far for those from the CBD and South Adelaide
  • Gets fully-booked often

The chef was amazing with the kids

“My girls just did the school holiday cooking class at Port Adelaide and had so much fun we booked again for next week.

The Chef was amazing with the kids and on the way home they could not stop talking about how much fun they had and how they want to come back every day.

10/10 and will be back again.”

We thought it was great fun

“We did the couples date night cooking class. We thought it was great fun and enjoyed the intimate experience. I’ve done the Jamie Oliver ministry of food cooking classes and sprout cooking classes and this one is great value! Stephen makes it a great experience and is so accommodating. He is eager to please. You can tell he loves his job. Highly recommend checking it out and supporting this business!”

Just Eat Plants is for vegans or vegetarians who want to create their own meals.

It was founded by Rebecca Stonor who has been making these meals since she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Her teaching style is casual yet informative, thanks to her small class sizes and online class format. She also teaches dishes from many countries including Italy, Indonesia, India, Morocco, and more.

That said, her specialization in vegan and vegetarian dishes may make her incompatible for some. Also, she has limited appointment slots.

Pros

  • Specializes in vegan and vegetarian dishes
  • Teaches a good variety of dishes
  • Casual yet informative teaching style
  • Administered online

Cons

  • Not for those who want to learn meat dishes
  • Limited appointment slots

Knowledgeable and well researched

“Our evening with Rebecca was amazing. Rebecca is very relatable and knowledgeable, and well researched.

It’s so nice and reassuring to hear about her plant based journey and how it’s helped her heal from her autoimmune disease.

The cooking class was hands on and all the dishes we made were nutritious and delicious!

I love all of Rebecca recipes on her website and can’t wait to make the guilt free sticky date pudding recipe!

I follow “Just eat plants” on her facebook page and often find cooking inspirations!”
