6 Best Pretzels in Adelaide That Had Me Twisted (In a Good Way)!
I have some German heritage in my family, and I love immersing myself in this shared culture through food (these restaurants are my go-tos)!
One of the most iconic German foods is the pretzel, a bread baked with yeast and twisted into a ribbon-like shape. It has a subtle salty taste and lovely crunch.
I found these local spots that curb my cravings for these treats and fell in love with how they remind me of my family’s recipe! Check these out for a delightful snack!

The German Cake Shop is one of the best spots in Hahndorf to get authentic pretzels made fresh daily! The pretzels here are bigger than the size of my hand! They can be served plain or topped with a generous amount of sugar and powder.
Aside from pretzels, the cake shop also sells apple strudel, a pastry filled with apple jam and apple pieces, and bee sting cake, a kind of pastry made with yeast, almonds, and vanilla custard.
Pro tip: The interior of The German Cake Shop imitates a typical German home setup! It has a cosy, homey atmosphere. You can also explore the shop to learn more about German settlers in Australia.

Another spectacular place I love visiting in Hahndorf to eat pretzels is The German Arms. It contains a restaurant, a pub, and a hotel. Don’t worry, the restaurant and pub are open to everyone, even if you’re not staying in the hotel.
Their pretzel there comes in various servings, including a small or solo plate or a platter for sharing. When I go there alone, I order their small pretzel, served with mustard butter. I love spreading this condiment all over the pretzel’s surface, giving it a touch of tang.
When with friends, we share the pretzels in the Arms Sausage Platter. Alongside a selection of pretzels are various sausages, dips, and condiments. I love that we can mix and match the platter to our liking!
Pro tip: The German Arms has a schnitzel night every Monday, starting at 5 pm until 9 pm. They also have a buffet night, beginning at 5:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. These special events in their restaurant serve unique German food, including exclusive releases of pretzel variants!

Lobethal Bakery serves an assortment of pretzels, including interesting fusions!
They specialise in the pretzel salad roll. The pretzel is served with salami, honey mustard, cheese, carrots, spring onions, and lettuce. This makes the pretzel savoury, with the fresh vegetables adding an extra crunch and the salami adding a subtle spiciness.
The bakery’s pretzels can also be ordered on their own, either as a single order or as a bundle.
Aside from pretzels, they also have cakes, salads, coffee, sweet pastries, and all-day breakfast available on their menu.
Pro tip: Lobethal Bakery has seasonal food and product launches, including pretzels! For their 50th anniversary, celebrated last June, the pretzel salad roll was actually their newest addition to the menu. Keep updated on their events and latest menu items through their Instagram account!

The German Spoon serves their pretzels on platters with an assortment of condiments and sides to spice them up! This is best recommended for groups of two to four.
For the two-person serving, the pretzels are paired with pork neck, sausages, honey mustard dressing, mashed potatoes, mustard sauce made with wine, and pickles.
Meanwhile, the platter for four people has an exclusive honey-glazed, sticky pork neck and chicken sausage called huhn wurst. Moreover, they also have a generous serving of chicken and pork schnitzel.

Pretzel King is a pop-up stall selling pretzels, coffee beverages, and gelato. They have three staple pretzel variations on their menu: standard plain, glazed, and topped with sprinkles.
The glazed pretzel is topped with a milky white, rich cream, its sweetness complementing the pretzel’s saltiness.
On the other hand, the sprinkles pretzel has a coat made of a blend of powdered and crystal sugar, adding extra texture and sweetness!
Pro tip: Try dipping a pretzel piece into a gelato! The dense sweetness complements the pretzel’s light crunch.

Pretzel Ally is another pop-up pretzel stall that has a variety of sweet and savoury pretzels.
For the sweet pretzel category, the bread can be topped with Nutella, cinnamon, Oreo, or a sweet, creamy, and thick glaze.
For the savoury pretzels, they have cheese and chives, Hawaiian fusion, cheese and bacon, and even a spicy flavour made with pepperoni and jalapeño!
I also love their pretzel cheese dogs, which is quite a unique way to transform and serve pretzels! The pretzel is still made as is, but instead of being shaped on its own, it’s twisted and wrapped around a sausage, then toasted with cheese. I love that it’s two German food staples in one serving!
You can also order their pretzels through their website.
Pro tip: They have vegan-friendly options!
