The steam-powered and iconic Cockle Train offers a nostalgia-filled ride along Adelaide’s majestic coastlines. This heritage train kicks off its daily journey from Goolwa Station, nestled in the historic Wharf Precinct, before proceeding to Victor Harbor.
Passengers will experience a ride through time along Australia’s oldest steel-railed railway, built way back in 1854 to connect the River Murray to the ocean’s wharves at Port Elliot and Victor Harbor.
It’s not all about ocean views, though, as the Cockle Train cruises through plains, making pit stops at Middleton and Port Elliot, where you can check out the Southern Fleurieu Historical Museum.
In addition, as the train leaves Port Elliot, it will pass through cliffs, offering panoramic views of Fleurieu Peninsula’s beaches. The last stop before the return ride also showcases the lush pine trees of the Victor Harbor Station.
| Tips: Board the train during winter for a chance to spot southern right whales in the Southern Ocean. Bookings aren’t required, except for groups with 10 or more members. The Bugle Ranger is an hour-long voyage that’ll whisk you southwards from Mt Barker straight up to the peak of the ranges at Philcox Hill station site.
Towering at a whopping 1,304 feet above sea level, the station is steeped in history. Back in the day, it was a bustling hub for trains and miners. The land’s elevation also makes it a premier spot for sightseeing.
After soaking up the scenic vistas at Philcox Hill, the train takes a turn around Bonython Hill, cruising past cuttings, and arriving at the old Bugle Ranges station site.
Adult fares at $17, kids 5 to 15 years at $9, and seniors at $15. And don’t forget the Family ticket at $39; plus, your little ones under 5 hitch a ride for free!
