For $165, the full-day Coorong experience takes you through the Goolwa Barrage, the Murray Mouth, and the unspoiled waters of the Coorong. There’s also a guided bush walk through sand dunes, where you can spot birdlife and enjoy the fresh air.

Onboard, you’re treated to refreshments, lunch, and tea, but for me, the highlight was the cultural storytelling by the Indigenous guides. They shared ancient stories, traditions, and their deep connection to the land. It added a meaningful layer to the trip, making it both educational and memorable!

However, one drawback is the extra charge for meals for children under two years old. It’s a bit of a downside for families wanting a seamless experience. Even so, this unique adventure is well worth it.

The scenery is unmatched, the abundant bird life a photographer’s dream. Morning tea and lunch was delicious, fresh, more than adequate, all served on board. The return trip by coach was comfortable and also surprisingly interesting, Gavin of Rufus Coaches informative about the history, agriculture and industry of all the towns on the route. A thoroughly enjoyable day getting to see and know a little more about this very special part of South Australia. Their 2024 tourism awards are well deserved!”

For $275, the 3-hour cruise includes meals like beer-battered fish, pumpkin soup, and more. I tried their grilled fish, and it was incredibly fresh! The crispy golden crust, tender flakes, and lightly smoky flavour, paired with lemon and fresh herbs, was the perfect meal for the trip.

However, one downside is that children under seven aren’t allowed onboard. Additionally, trips may be rescheduled if gale-force winds are in the forecast.

“Our group had a fabulous time on a sunny Sunday afternoon on board the Captain Proud Paddle boat. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. We sailed on time and had an enjoyable and relaxed afternoon, taking in the spectacular views. Our lunch was freshly cooked on board, and the grilled fish, home made apple crumble, and fruit salad were all delicious. We were lucky to be entertained by two talented musicians on our trip. A bonus for sure! Good value for money and a comfortable way to cruise down the Murray River.”

With 18 cabins featuring ensuites, air conditioning, and coffee-making facilities, it’s a comfortable getaway. There are flexible options, whether you’re up for a week-long escape or just a scenic lunch cruise.

I booked the 5-day cruise and loved the mix of activities, like a lagoon cruise, guided walk, and a bush barbecue. 

But my personal favourite was the historic towns we passed: Tailem Bend, Peebinga, Lyrup, and Renmark. Each spot had interesting old buildings, local museums, and stories of South Australia’s past!

However, one of the drawbacks was the noise near the engine room, which could be disruptive in the mornings. The food was tasty but served in small portions, which might leave some wanting more.

“We took nan on a lunch cruise for her 100th birthday. The staff were amazing with making sure she got on and off the boat with no issues. The food was absolutely beautiful and the views to die for. The captain gave her a birthday card from the owners/crew and the whole boat sang happy birthday. Highly recommended for a well-organized tour

“A group of 15 of us have just returned from a wonderful Proud Mary organised trip of the Murray River and Kangaroo Island. Everything went to plan and ran smoothy. The Proud Mary cruise was so nice and the staff and food were exceptional. Our tour guide Joanne on Kangaroo Island was fabulous. She knows all the history of the Island and is very passionate with all the animals that live on the island, stopping on occasions as she spotted something either flying, in a tree or on the side of the road. A very well planned tour. Highly recommend it.”

River Torrens Popeye Cruises offers stunning views of Adelaide’s cityscape and the changing river landscapes. The boat has comfortable seating and a licensed bar serving local wines, beers, and ciders. It’s also easy on the wallet, with trips costing no more than $50.

The cruise started on the River Torrens and passed landmarks like the Adelaide Festival Centre, SAHMRI, Adelaide Gaol, and Adelaide Zoo. 

What stood out for me was the live commentary by a local guide. It added so much to the trip, sharing fascinating stories and history about the sights we passed.

The only downside is that the cruises feel too short. The sightseeing cruise lasts just 45 minutes, while the high tea option runs for about 1.5 hours. A little more time on the water would make the experience even better.

If you’re keen on seeing or swimming with wild dolphins, Temptation Sailing is the way to go. Their Wild Dolphin Swim/Watch cruise offers stunning views of Adelaide’s coastline and the chance to spot dolphins up close from their 360-degree viewing deck. The pricing is reasonable too, at around $149!

The cruise lasted about four hours, and for me, the highlight was the marine biologist on board. They explained dolphin behaviours, social structures, and conservation efforts, which made the trip both educational and engaging. It was great to listen while enjoying a drink from the bar.

One thing to note is that you can’t bring your own drinks on board. Seating is also limited, so it’s worth arriving early to grab the best spots. 

A fun and educational cruise

“My wife & I had a really enjoyable experience with temptation, maybe we were lucky but we managed to see 3 sightings of dolphin pods (3 swims both front & back).

“The team are marine biologists who do care about the dolphins and try to ensure we respect these marine animals. Instructions & briefings were crystal clear, and they provide all the gear needed incl. wetsuit, aqua shoes, mask & snorkel (excluding cameras of course)

“The front “swim” was in general a lot more comfortable and the time where you get to really get up close with the dolphins. The back “swim” however I can only recommend for strong & confident swimmings because you will be holding onto a rope while the boat is moving. All in all, was a really magical experience, and would recommend to join!”
