Relax and drink the night away at the 9 best country pubs in Adelaide!

After a long day at work, feeling drained and hungry, finding a spot to unwind can make all the difference. Pubs offer a chance to relax, connect with others, and ease feelings of isolation.

We’ve all had those days—mentally and physically exhausting—when you just want a good meal and a drink to take the edge off. But with 221 pubs across Adelaide, choosing where to go can feel overwhelming.

Lucky for you, I went on a quest to find great options for dining and relaxing. Here are the best country pubs in the city that I found.

Sevenhill Hotel is a classic pub, perfect for a relaxed family outing. The vibe is cozy and laid-back, with both indoor and outdoor seating. There’s even an underground wine cellar if you’re after something a bit more private.

It’s not just the atmosphere that stands out. The food is worth the trip! On our visit, the menu featured traditional pub favourites like fish and chips, slow-cooked pork belly, and butter chicken. These dishes pair beautifully with their Clare Valley Riesling.

I went for the slow-cooked pork belly, priced at $34. The meat was tender and flavorful, seasoned with herbs and spices, and finished with a crispy golden crust.

Tip: Don’t miss the giant Jenga in the beer garden. It’s a fun way to spend time with family or friends while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.

The Golden Wattle is a laid-back pub in Adelaide with a warm, welcoming vibe. It’s popular with locals, families, and groups alike. The outdoor dining area is wheelchair accessible, making it easy for everyone to enjoy the space.

Live music and sports on the big screen bring extra energy to the vibe. We caught Spacerhead, an emerging Aussie post-punk band, during our visit, and we thoroughly enjoyed their energetic performance.

The food didn’t disappoint either. The Korean-style pork ribs, priced at $36, were tender and packed with flavour. The glaze of soy, garlic, and ginger gave the ribs a sticky, sweet, and slightly spicy kick—a perfect choice for a hearty pub meal.

Tip: Sit by their open-plan kitchen with a large wood-fired grill to see how your food is being cooked. Plus, you can easily strike up conversations with the staff and other guests.

While there’s no full kitchen, the Wheatsheaf Hotel serves up impressive cheese platters. At just A$20, we found ours to be a satisfying mix of creamy, tangy, and rich flavours. The platter typically includes cheeses like applewood smoked cheddar and Cheshire Farm varieties, along with chutney, biscuits, and grapes, perfectly balancing sweet and savoury.

Tip: Pair your platter with their Wheaty Sir Bob, a crisp German-style pilsner. Its clear appearance and subtle hop notes make it an ideal match for the cheese selection.

The menu offers a mix of pub favourites and modern dishes. But the star for us is their 10-inch pizza, Crown Deluxe, for A$22. It has a savoury combination of zesty pepperoni, fresh green peppers, earthy mushrooms, and melted cheese, making it a hearty option that hits the spot.

You’ll also find darts and pool tables here, perfect for a casual catch-up with mates or family.

For modern Australian dishes with a regional twist, Stanley Bridge Tavern in Verdun is worth a visit. This historic pub, established in 1853, offers a cozy front bar with an open fireplace and candlelit dining areas.

If you prefer dining outdoors, there’s a beer garden that provides views of the beautiful Verdun landscape. It’s a great spot to unwind with a drink or meal in a relaxed setting.

Their best-selling foods here are Benny’s Ribs and the Cajun Pecker. I chose the Cajun Pecker for $28—a char-grilled chicken breast with bold Cajun seasoning. It was served with sour cream, tomato salsa, jalapeños, and slaw, delivering a perfect balance of heat and freshness.

Tip: Pair your meal with a Cooper’s Pale Ale. Its crisp, refreshing taste complements the spicy dishes and rounds out the experience.

If you’re into wine, you’ll love their list. They feature local wines and craft beers from the Uraidla Brewery. These pair perfectly with the gourmet dishes on offer.

The menu leans towards modern Australian fare, focusing on fresh, local produce. I tried the eight-hour smoked Najobe beef rib for $38. It was rich, tender, and rubbed with ancho chilli and Uri beer brine—a hearty and satisfying choice.

The menu balances pub classics with modern Australian dishes. I tried the Crafers Hotel Burger, priced at $30. The juicy, well-seasoned beef patty delivered rich, satisfying flavours.

For drinks, there’s an impressive range of wines and craft beers. Options include selections from local producers and prestigious Old World wineries, such as Petrus and Mouton Rothschild.

There are two outdoor options: a spacious beer garden out back and a cozy meeting spot at the front, great for people-watching or relaxing.

I tried the Cumberland pizza during a family visit, and it didn’t disappoint. For $25, it had a great mix of flavours with a crispy base, rich tomato sauce, and plenty of melted cheese. I paired it with their ice-cold tap beer which was crisp and flavourful.

Tip: Drop by on a Tuesday night for trivia with Quiz Meisters. It’s a fun way to spend the evening with some friendly competition.
