The Best Port Adelaide Markets That Are Better Than Big-Box Stores

Why waste money at some overpriced joint when you can hit up Port Adelaide markets and snag deals hotter than the Outback?

From Markets at the Mill to Parissos Seafood, this stunning and historic port town has haunts for you to peruse. If you’re lucky, you might even find one that’ll make you ditch your costly grocery store.

Don’t believe us? Perhaps the details below will change your mind!

Markets at the Mill

Address: 9A Mundy St
Facebook

We shop a lot, and Markets at the Mill is one of our team’s go-to monthly markets. With free entry, a spacious and rustic setting, and dog-friendly sections, it isn’t hard to see why.

Think of it as Port Adelaide’s local treasure trove brimming with over 90 stalls that sling any goodie under the sun, from kaleidoscopic flowers and aromatic candles to artisan pastries and gourmet jams.

Moreover, food trucks line up outside while live musicians add buzz to the air. Parasols also provide much-needed shade, so the South Australian sun won’t bother you too much.

Tip: As you can see, there are no operating hours listed because they change every month. Check their Facebook or Instagram for the exact dates. This applies to all markets in this article without business hours.

The People’s Market at Hart

Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Thu – Closed
  • Fri to Sun – 10 am to 4 pm

The People’s Market at Hart is probably the main reason we’re hooked on local and farm-to-table produce.

For us, its main draws include the friendly sellers who won’t hoodwink you, farm-fresh supplies that won’t give you second thoughts, and a picturesque setting composed of lush offerings and colorful wares.

As for the products, we often take home locally-made bread and pastries, pantry staples, and a gardener’s dream selection of plants, seeds, and substrate.  Last June 2024, we even scored some heavily discounted, ripened produce that was too good to pass up.

Oh, and most sellers also dished out eco-friendly garden tips. Talk about a win-win!

Make It Mine Markets

Address: Port Mall, 178 St Vincent St
Facebook

The Make It Mine Markets is where our team swings by when we’re in the mood for crafts, arts, and all things fashionable.

It usually runs from September to May and boasts 60 stalls with wares that can up your glam and bling levels. We’re talking about chic, trendy, and whimsical fashion accessories, jewelry, skincare, and homewares.

What makes it special is the beachside location. After a day of shopping, groups and lone wolves have the option to swim, surf, snorkel, or simply enjoy the sunset, while DJs and food vendors keep the tunes and snacks flowing.

Tip: If you can’t make it to the Port Adelaide venue, don’t let the FOMO get you. There’s still the Henley Beach market location right on the suburb’s main street!

If you’re on the prowl for fresh and mouthwatering fruits, minus the hard-hitting price tags, Farmer Joe’s Fresh Food Barn might be what you’re after.

The market pumps out regular monthly specials, a loyalty program that actually rewards your shopping sprees, and staff who not only crunch numbers but also dish out juicy info on the produce.

Furthermore, they sell European cheeses, cold cuts, pickled food, and dried fruits that are hard to pick up elsewhere. Oh, and Farmer Joe’s is also one of the few local spots selling Kangaroo Island eggs.

Tip: To stretch your dollars further, scout their Facebook page for sales or special deals.

Sustainable Fashion Market

With the Sustainable Fashion Market around, you can rock vintage, contemporary, or artsy outfits guilt-free. If you’re wondering why and how, it’s because the market is all about celebrating sustainable fashion finds that can turn heads and drop jaws.

You won’t run out of stalls to peruse, too. Just this March 2024, we spent hours browsing over 70 stalls—all packed with high-quality dresses, accessories, jewelry, and outerwear.

Tip: If you’re planning to sell your vintage, pre-loved, or designer goods, consider applying for a stall. The application process is detailed on the market’s website.

Parissos Seafood

Contact Details: (08) 8447 4177
Operating Hours:

  • Mon – Closed
  • Tue to Fri – 9 am to 5:30 pm
  • Sat – 9 am to 3 pm
  • Sun – Closed

Website

When in Port Adelaide, Parissos Seafood never fails to reel us in with its top-notch selection.

We’ll have to warn you, though: choosing what to take home can be a struggle. With an ever-present sea of options including flathead, barramundi, snapper, and even bluefin tuna, we always find ourselves in a delicious dilemma here.

The what-seafood-to-buy conundrum gets trickier once you add their prized crustaceans and mollusks into the mix. Think A-grade lobsters, crabs, and octopus, squid, and oysters.

The Port Adelaide Emporium

Address: 113 Commercial Rd
Contact Details: 0431 141 029
Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Thu – Closed
  • Fri to Sun – 12 pm to 5 pm

Facebook

Although technically just a store, The Port Adelaide Emporium packs a punch with its market-level number of antiques, art, and retro treasures.

Seriously, every nook and cranny of this spot is filled to the brim with pocket-friendly collectibles that’ll make any nostalgia-lover swoon.

For instance, when we swung by, our team spotted quirky animal figurines, ornate lamps, “vintage” magazines (if you catch our drift), and even a few creepy dolls and mannequins thrown in for good measure.

Semaphore Community Market

Address: St Bede’s Church hall and courtyard, 200 Military Rd
Operating Hours: 0447 456 607
Facebook

You know you’re in for a treat when the Semaphore Community Market rolls around. Firstly, it’s set by the beach, so the vistas and breeze are both soothing.

On top of that, the goodies are as diverse as the waves crashing nearby. For starters, there are cupcakes, cushions, jewelry, pots, bread, bath bombs, honey…you get our point.

There are also sections pushing eco-friendly products and old-fashioned bric-a-brac, from handmade wooden toys and trinket boxes to vintage saucers and plates. Our favorites though, are the gemstone and mystic stalls—these have glittery things galore!

Tip: The market has an indoor section too, but if you’re all about that al fresco vibe, make sure to prep. Check the temperature or pack sunscreen. Beach markets are cool, but intense sunlight sunburns can ruin the vibe.
