Pros
- Smashed avocados have a great crunchy texture and come with a unique herbal flavor
- Vegan-friendly
- Energetic restaurant atmosphere with plenty of plantlife
Cons
- Pricey
- Inconsistent portions
Argos on the Parade’s smashed avocados were a refreshing delight perfect for the morning. Its Egyptian dukkah, feta, and rye give it that crunchy texture, while its lemon, mint, and basil add a refreshing herbal touch.
The restaurant is perfect for those looking for a healthy spot for breakfast and lunch. Almost all their dishes are customizable, and the smashed avocados are no different.
My friend customized her smashed avocados to be vegan-friendly by adding enoki mushrooms and crispy kale.
Moreover, I love the vibe of the place. It’s breezy (perfect for mornings!) and has plenty of plant life and an energetic atmosphere.
That said, we found their prices a bit steep. I also noticed that their portions are a bit inconsistent.

Pros
- Infuses pickled onions into smashed avocados for a deliciously tangy aftertaste
- Plant-centric menu
- Good side dishes for smashed avos
Cons
- Pricey
- Inconsistent food quality
Pickle in the Middle lives up to its name, as they infuse smashed avocados with pickled onions, which give them a tangy (and much welcome) aftertaste. Made with wheat and rye sourdough bread, the toast also has quite the crunch too.
The shop’s approach to food is commendable, as it sources everything locally and sustainably. They craft their pickles, and it’s great how creative they are in mixing the pickles with various items in their plant-centric menu.
Further making the smashed avos a delight are the sides you can eat it with. My favorite was the grilled halloumi which had just the right smokiness to it.
Other choices for sides include free-range egg and beetroot-cured salmon, both of which I recommend for those who want protein for breakfast. Vegans will also like their in-house-made seed bread because of its nutty and earthy flavor.
In terms of downsides, the shop’s prices are a bit high. Also, the food quality can be inconsistent.

Pros
- Classically made smashed avocados
- Scenic spot near Henley Beach
- Comfy and relaxed dining space
- Vegan option available for smashed avos
Cons
- Long service times (about 20–30 minutes for small orders)
MALOBO Bakery and Terrace Bar’s smashed avocado is delightfully creamy, buttery, and subtly nutty. Enhanced with halloumi, balsamic vinegar, and beetroot hummus, it’s a flavorful and health-conscious choice.
Furthermore, the cafe has a scenic advantage near Henley Beach. As a jogger, it’s my go-to spot for a quick meal or to simply take in the refreshing sunrise or sunset.
I appreciate their effort in making sure that both interior and exterior dining spots are as comfy and relaxed as possible.
I also like that they have a vegan option for their smashed avos that substitutes halloumi with mushrooms.
While they’re a solid pick, a downside with the shop is their long serving times (about 20–30 minutes for small orders).

Pros
- Homey atmosphere
- Classic smashed avocado recipe (avocado, dukkah, and lemon)
- Great value for money
Cons
- Limited seating, long queuing time (about 20–30 minutes)
A Mother’s Milk has always fascinated me because of its name, and I understood why upon my visit. After all, the shop provides a very homey and relaxed atmosphere with a wood-and-brick design and retro decor.
This vibe is also reflected in their menu which is mostly standard cafe food like green chili eggs with pepper, Mexican breakfast eggs, and tortillas.
Similarly, their smashed avocados have the same appeal with their straightforward composition: creamy avocados, dukkah for texture, and lemon for a refreshing taste. You get value for your money because their servings are very filling.
For my pal (the morning heavyweight eater), the addition of poached egg and mushrooms made the meal complete.
However, a downside of the shop is because they have limited seating, they have a long queuing time (about 20–30 minutes).

Pros
- Smashed avocados are deliciously tangy
- Sources ingredients locally
- Large dining space
Cons
- Pricey
- Inconsistent serving sizes
Hello, Strangers’ smashed avocados lean more on the deliciously tangy side through the use of cherry tomatoes and Danish feta. Mixed nuts and sourdough also add a delightful crunch to the dish.
All of their ingredients are sourced locally from suppliers such as Altura Coffee, Paris Creek Farm, Rohde’s Egg, and the Central Market.
Their menu is also a blend of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free food.
The cafe has one of the largest dining spaces I’ve seen, allowing plenty of people to dine without bumping into each other. Lighting and ventilation are also great, and I’ve never seen them looking untidy.
I also appreciate their staff’s friendliness and prompt service.
That said, their rates are a bit pricey. Some diners also found their serving sizes to be a bit inconsistent.
