Track record. I checked how long they've been operating, the quality of their work, and the complexity of engine rebuilding they offer.
Professionalism. It's important for the engine rebuilders to meet deadlines, respond promptly to inquiries, and be easily reachable.
Fairness of fees. The engine rebuilding fees should be reasonable, considering the complexity of the work. They should also facilitate smooth transactions regarding insurance matters.
Warranty. Lastly, their warranty should be reasonable, and they should be prompt in addressing warranty claims.

Pros

  • Professional and straightforward to talk to
  • Wide range of services provided
  • Has worked on engines of many types of vehicles
  • Has been operating since 1994

Cons

  • Shop is far from CBD
  • Takes long to answer through website contact form

I heard many good things about Lonsdale Engine Worx, and upon visiting them, I wasn’t disappointed at all.

Talking to Ross was straightforward and easy. They repaired my Ford Falcon’s engine, replacing the valve system as promised, with the exact parts and price agreed upon.

It also helps that the crew doesn’t overestimate their capabilities. They were honest with the prices of their service (which was reasonable) along with the exact parts they’re confident with rebuilding.

The services they provide are comprehensive and compatible with most vehicles. I’ve seen them work on RVs and cargo trucks with no issues.

Given all of these, I wasn’t surprised to learn that they have been operating since 1994. The quality of their work speaks for itself.

However, do take note that their shop is located in Lonsdale, which is approximately a 30-minute drive from the CBD.

Additionally, if you contact them through their website, they may take some time to respond. I recommend contacting them by phone instead.

Pros

  • Accessible location
  • High-quality engine rebuilding materials
  • Follows deadlines
  • Reasonable duration of warranty

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Has many clients, may not be able to entertain new clients immediately

The Original Engine Bay is one of Adelaide’s most accessible engine rebuilders, conveniently located in Salisbury Plain.

What sets them apart is the exceptional quality of their work. They exclusively use HM/GEM units, the industry standard in Australia for engine rebuilding.

My uncle had his sedan serviced there and couldn’t stop praising them. He was particularly impressed by their efficiency and flawless work, which meant he didn’t have to return for any follow-up repairs or adjustments.

If any issues arise, I doubt he’ll be disappointed with the shop’s long warranty term too!

Nathan, their lead engine mechanic, has over 33 years of experience in the business. Moreover, being certified by the Royal Automobile Association, they have gained immense trust from their regulars.

That said, it’s worth noting that their prices are on the higher side. Additionally, due to their popularity, they often have a full schedule and may not be able to accommodate new clients immediately.

Pros

  • Services a wide range of vehicles
  • Affordable fees
  • Quick to work
  • Multilingual team

Cons

  • Not responsive on contact line
  • Younger than other engine rebuilders in Adelaide

Challenger Mechanical Repairs is an excellent choice overall.

Firstly, they have the ability to work on a wide range of vehicles, regardless of size or age. They’ve successfully fixed the engines of sedans, vintage cars, RVs, trucks, and more.

Moreover, their fees for engine rebuilding are some of the most affordable I’ve come across. Starting at $160, you won’t have to worry about a significant dent in your wallet after a repair.

A coworker of mine had her Corolla’s engine redone at their shop, and she primarily praised the convenience of the whole process.

She mentioned that their representatives swiftly assessed her situation, provided a quote, and efficiently carried out the repairs.

It’s worth noting that the shop’s staff is multilingual, fluent in English, Vietnamese, Arabic, Mandarin, and Cantonese, which is a helpful advantage.

Additionally, I found their online booking tool to be extremely convenient, especially when it comes to selecting a preferred date and time for your appointment.

However, one downside I noticed is that they aren’t very responsive on their contact line. Another minor drawback is that they are relatively younger compared to other engine rebuilders in the area, as they were established in 2008.

Pros

  • Has been in business since 1991
  • Advanced engine testing and repair equipment
  • Well-stocked
  • Quick to work

Cons

  • Has no mechanics onboard
  • A bit pricey

Adelaide Cylinder Heads is an excellent choice, as engine rebuilding is their specialty. They’ve been in the engine business since 1991, working on a wide variety of vehicles.

Their remodeling service is incredibly comprehensive and stands out among others.

I say this because they utilize advanced equipment for testing and repairs. For instance, their CNC Seat Profiling Machine makes measuring engine dimensions faster and more accurate, particularly beneficial for vintage models.

A coworker of mine also commended their straightforward process for initial consultations. They offer a free digital hardness check, allowing you to easily assess the gasket’s condition.

Furthermore, they have one of the best-stocked inventories among engine rebuilders in Adelaide. A quick glance at their shop reveals the abundance of spare parts they have, ensuring speedy repairs.

However, it’s worth noting a couple of downsides. First, they don’t provide mechanics to remove and replace cylinder heads, necessitating the hiring of a separate professional for that task.

Additionally, their fees are slightly higher compared to other engine rebuilders in Adelaide.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Uses high-quality repair materials
  • Consultations are straightforward
  • Accessible location

Cons

  • Small team
  • Responds slow to queries in website

John Moyle Motor Engineering offers straightforward and old-fashioned service, which many people appreciate!

A friend of mine had her sedan repaired at their shop, and she had high regards for how the team made the consultation easy to understand, even for someone with limited car knowledge.

She was also thrilled that they gave her a discounted rate when she opted for engine rebuilding and minor repairs on her tail lights.

I’ve heard similar positive feedback from other clients, who especially appreciate their honesty regarding which engines they can repair. It’s a testament to their transparency and expertise.

In terms of repair quality, I have no complaints, as they have an impressive track record with numerous satisfied clients. Additionally, they use industry-standard brands for their parts, including NGK, Hastings, Durapro, Bendix, and Crowcams.

Furthermore, their shop in Enfield is conveniently accessible, which is a great advantage.

If there’s room for improvement, one area is expanding their team. Due to its small size, they’re unable to handle multiple clients simultaneously.

They could also work on responding more promptly to queries through their website, as they currently have a slow response time.
