When I was a student looking for advice on my future career after graduation, I prioritised career counselling services near academic institutions, such as the University of Adelaide.

One of them is Revolution Career Counselling. Its office is located in the scenic, peaceful suburbs of Broadview, which I could reach from the university in only 11 minutes (6 kilometres) by car.

I first met resident counsellor John Hogan through a free phone consultation call. This helped me better assess which of his programs are suited to my career obstacles before I visit.

Now that I am a fresh graduate job seeker, I consulted him through the Career and Personal Coaching Package, which was like a personalised handbook for employment!

This is because the program focused on highlighting my interests and personality, and my academic achievements. Then, these were aligned with a career best suitable to these factors.

What I liked the most about our counselling session is that he follows a step-by-step framework. He started with a skills assessment he called the Strong Interests Profile. This identified my values, career goals, and vocation, which I think are all important to finding a meaningful job I could enjoy and be proud of.

Sessions happened via Zoom and in his office, depending on what was most convenient for me.

He also shared with me that he has experience working with students and job seekers in private practice prior to opening to the public. It was helpful to know that he can be relied on to answer my career questions.

I also recommended him to my neurodivergent peers who may have different issues about their careers. This is because John Hogan also coaches students and young professionals diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, and autism.

Some points to consider, though: I found that having only one counsellor to choose from may not be enough for some who want a different perspective. Not to mention, this limits the number of appointments available.

Pros

  • One-on-one skills and interest assessment focused on students and young professionals who need career advice
  • Also offers career counselling for neurodivergent individuals
  • Free initial phone chat and call

Cons

  • Only one counsellor, may cause scheduling issues with consultations
  • Location may be far compared to career consultation services closer to business areas or schools

Incredibly reassuring

John’s career counselling in Adelaide was really helpful during a stressful and uncertain time in my career search. His positive and uplifting approach helped me stay focused and confident while working out my next steps. John is an astute professional, and his well-read insights into the world of work (and the future of work) were incredibly reassuring. He provided excellent resources and advice and I would thoroughly recommend him to anyone needing thoughtful, practical guidance.

I couldn’t recommend enough

I cannot recommend John enough! I was feeling incredibly stuck in my career. John was incredibly thorough and insightful in his service and gave me the confidence I needed to make a change. Not only did John guide me to a career perfectly suited for me, but his services were pivotal in landing a new job. John provided very friendly and flexible service, at times helping me at very short notice.

Since my friends learned that I was looking for career counselling services, I had to look for one that best matched their needs, too. They wanted to earn professional credentials and job experience. Plus, they also wanted a diverse range of counsellors.

I mentioned that we should check out Career Success Australia. Its office is just a short 14-minute walk or 7-minute car ride from our meeting point at the University of Adelaide.

Before our appointment, we were able to avail ourselves of their free initial consultation that can be booked online. This helped us understand their programs better and which aspects of our future careers we wanted to highlight.

The reason why I picked Career Success Australia is that, aside from their career counselling services, they also have internships and entry-level job offers that my friends and I could check out. Our fields of engineering, business and commerce, and information technology are covered. We had to grab the opportunity!

After surveying the internship offers, we went ahead and booked one-on-one appointments. We each have our own career issues, from being unsure which industry to get into to making the right decisions for securing employment.

Since they have a selection of career counsellors available, this helped us tailor the consultation to resolve our specific issues. This also enabled us to seek further advice from other counsellors after each session.

But even though this experience was commendable for me and my peers, it may not be for everyone.

For example, my friend’s older sister, who has an already established profession but is seeking a career expansion, may not find their services satisfying.

Their programs focused more on students and young professionals. This may not be helpful to professionals and career shifters, like my friend’s older sister.

Pros

  • Hands-on with client consultation from start to finish, specifically providing jobs and internships that can be included in resumes
  • Has an expansive network that their clients can utilise
  • More than one counsellor in their selection pool
  • Free consultation

Cons

  • Focuses on fresh graduates looking for job opportunities, may not be helpful for established professionals or career shifters
  • Internships are limited to engineering, information technology and business industries
  • Location may be a hassle to walk to

An outstanding experience

Working with career success has been an outstanding experience for me. As an international student after graduating from university I had a long career gap before I could get into the industry.

I am extremely thankful to Naren and team for the support & coaching through out the time that helped me overcome all the barriers and hurdles in securing an internship related to R&D in one of the most well reputed Australian companies, following that within 4 weeks of internship I have been offered a position in the same company.

I would highly recommend Career success to anyone looking for a better career in Australia.

Remember my friend’s older sister? Well, my friends and I reviewed more career counselling services that could help her out. In our search, we found Noted Careers Career Management.

What we liked about them is that they are located in Adelaide’s city centre. This is convenient for my friend’s older sister to check out, who works in the area!

Likewise, it is also convenient for me because it is only a 5-minute drive from the University of Adelaide, or a 9-minute commute via bus.

Their services are also open to my friends and me, who are fresh graduate job seekers. So, after a short free online consultation, we visited them, too!

We were able to select each of our preferred counsellors. My friend’s older sister opted to have online sessions after her work.

Meanwhile, my friends and I opted for face-to-face meetings, which helped us be more hands-on.

What I liked about the one-on-one session I underwent with them is that it focused on assessing my qualifications, arranging the needed job documentation, reviewing my resume and cover letter, and contacting potential employers. It was like having a personal manager!

This service quality makes sense, since they have over 80 years of experience managing job applications and career shifting for their clients.

However, I thought back to when my friends and I were still students. If we were still at that stage of our lives, the career services here might not be for us.

This is because the services focus more on job seekers, working individuals, and career shifters. They cannot do much for students wanting to know more about employment opportunities post-graduation.

Pros

  • A one-on-one coaching program developed and curated for each client
  • Over 80 years of career counselling
  • Network connection clients can utilise
  • More than one counsellor available
  • Free consultation option

Cons

  • Services may not be suitable for undergraduates or graduating students preparing for career advancement
