Crème de la Crème 5 Best Bakeries in Adelaide, Ranked!

Crème de la Crème: 5 Best Bakeries in Adelaide, Ranked!

  • Quality of baked goods. My priority was to check the freshness, texture, and taste of their baked products.
  • Variety of products. It would be great if the bakery could cater to a wider range of customers by offering gluten-free or sugar-free options. Additionally, having more flavors available would be a plus.
  • Fairness of prices. Their prices should be reasonable and justified, considering the quality of ingredients used.
  • Customer service. To enhance the customer's experience, the staff must be courteous.

Pros

  • Various baked products
  • Large loaves of bread
  • Convenient location, has online ordering option
  • Great customer service

Cons

  • Shop is not wheelchair-accessible
  • Designs of celebration cakes are a bit plain

Perrymans Bakery is notable for its use of original German recipes. They use premium quality ingredients all sourced locally, including their milk, flour, eggs, and meat.

The different types of bread they serve are large, as they use a traditional 2-day fermentation method.

A standout is their baguette because of its crisp crust and its soft interior.

In addition, they do not use preservatives or added gluten. When bought fresh, you can definitely tell they use high-quality ingredients through the bread’s aroma and long shelf life (up to 5 days).

Also, their breads come in many variations such as multigrain, olive and rosemary, fig and fennel, and more. These herbs and fruits give their bread a delightful mix of salty and earthy flavors.

I also found ordering here easy because of their convenient location and their well-made website. Their prices aren’t bad either.

Their staff also provides great service because they’re responsive and courteous.

Even though their dining space is small, it’s cozy and well-maintained.

If there’s anything they can improve on, one is in making their shop wheelchair accessible. Their main entrance is too small for this.

Also, their celebration cakes have designs that are too simple. It’s not my first choice if I’m looking for fun or innovative designs.

Pros

  • Open 24/7
  • Over 200 baked products available
  • Has a well-made vegetarian menu
  • Accessible location

Cons

  • No gluten-free options
  • Has received complaints for rude service

Bakery on O’Connell Street is open 24/7, making it one of the most accessible bakeries in Adelaide.

They have a large selection of over 200 products. Their cakes and breads come in many variations (vegetarian, all-meat, etc.), flavors (fruity, savory, and sweet), and sizes (mini cakes, family sized, etc.).

They cater to vegetarian and vegan diets, and their selection for this is well done. The bakery has options like mushroom casseroles, lentil dhal, and spinach squares.

I like their Nutella Heart (a bite-sized pastry) due to its fusion of chocolate and hazelnut and tender texture that effortlessly dissolves in the mouth.

Their pie floater is also notable because of its hearty meat sauce with tangy and sweet tomatoes. The meat pie’s crust was delightfully crisp, making biting it satisfying.

Their cafe is easily accessible because of its prime location on O’Connell Street. It can seat up to 80 people, and it’s well-maintained.

However, take note that they don’t provide gluten-free options. Another downside is that they’ve also received some complaints for rude service.

Pros

  • Appealing food presentation
  • Accessible and well-designed shop
  • Products are great for take-out

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Has received complaints for slow customer service

Abbots & Kinney is an excellent choice for those with a larger budget and want high-quality baked products. Their baked goods have great consistency, flavor, and presentation.

A highlight of theirs is Cheesy Peasy, which blends caramelized onions, five cheeses, and sourdough. The bread has crisp and slightly burned tips, which helps balance the creamy and savory flavor of its cheese.

I find their other pastry flavors exciting too.

My other favorite here is the Ugly Raspbetty—raspberry compote in croissant pastry. It has a perfect balance of the sourness of berry and the woody flavor of cinnamon.

Additionally, their shop on Pirie Street is elegantly designed, which elevates the experience of dining in.

However, I noticed that their food is pricier compared to other nearby bakeries. Also, some past customers complained that some of their servers are slow to respond to requests.

Pros

  • Consistent quality of baked products
  • Owner has many awards for pastries, pies, cakes, and more
  • Creative designs for celebration cakes
  • Seasonal offerings are highly praised by past customers

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Needs to be advised 3-5 days beforehand for cakes

The Village Baker is recommendable because of their attention to detail when it comes to their baked products. From my experience, they’re consistent in terms of quality and flavor.

The shop’s owner, Ben Sachse, has received many awards from the Royal Adelaide Show for pastries, pies, cakes, and more.

Their cakes have creative designs that make them more appetizing.

One of their best ones is the Retro Vintage Lace, which has a cute pastel color palette. It’s made with 3 thick layers of fluffy sponge cake with luscious flavors of vanilla and berry jam.

The Color Burst Cake, their child-friendly confection, has an incredibly inviting rainbow design. It’s made with vanilla buttercream and moist sponge cake that melts easily on the tongue.

The Gluttony Cake also has a fun mix of cream, berry jam, and chocolate sponge. Because it is topped with macarons, the drip cake has a flavorful fusion of nutty and sweet flavors.

Past customers also said the staff is professional when it comes to meeting deadlines for these too.

Many also had high praise for their seasonal offerings because they are flavorful and come in large servings. Their Christmas cake, in particular, offers great value with its large serving size and high-quality ingredients.

That said, in general, their baked products are pricier compared to nearby bakeries. Also, you’ll have to order 3 days in advance for their cakes.

Pros

  • Great selection of French-inspired goods
  • Large selection
  • Reasonable prices
  • Has many on-the-go foods offered

Cons

  • Small shop
  • Slow service

Mulots Patisserie has a great selection of sweets such as pastries, mousse cakes, and macarons. They are designed colorfully and come in just the right servings for their price.

Their savory selections are highly recommendable because they execute French cuisine well.

Their comtoise, in particular, has a delightfully delicate crunch. When served hot, it gives off the creamy sweetness of dairy and earthy flavors of potato.

I also found their selection of quiches very diverse, as they have options with leek and goat cheese, broccoli, asparagus, prawns, mushrooms, and more. Its abundant use of herbs mixed with its creamy custard makes all variations taste equally flavorful.

The bakery has plenty of to-go food too. They have various coffees and croissants.

Their croissants, in particular, have a rich buttery flavor, crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside.

However, a downside to them is that their shop is a bit small. Also, some customers found the servers here to be slow.
