Pasadena Dental and Implant Centre is a good option if you find yourself needing urgent care. They provide same-day services for emergencies and can even take patients after hours when the case is severe.

For gum health, they offer periodontal treatments such as flap surgery to clean infected pockets and root planing to remove plaque and tartar. They also provide dental implants, including the All-on-4 option for those who need a full set of teeth replaced.

Since periodontal treatments can be costly, it helps that they offer payment plans so patients can spread the fees into more manageable amounts. They also run promotions, including no-gap dental checkups for those with health insurance.

Unfortunately, their location isn’t ideal for residents in Adelaide’s northern suburbs. I also heard from some patients that they experienced rude behaviour from the staff.

I ended up at Melbourne Street Perio after my dentist suggested I see a specialist for the swelling in my upper left gums. The clinic opened in 2021 and is led by Dr Geoff Harvey, a periodontist with more than 10 years of experience.

In my case, Dr Harvey carried out a deep cleaning to remove the infection that had been causing the swelling. His work was quick and methodical, and the pain eased far sooner than I expected.

I found out he also offers specialised treatments such as soft tissue grafting, crown lengthening, and gingivectomy. But what I really appreciated was that the clinic has HICAPS, so I was able to claim my health fund rebate on the spot.

The few drawbacks are that bookings can only be made over the phone, and since it’s a small practice, appointment availability can sometimes be limited.

Adelaide Periodontal & Implant Professionals was founded in 1991, making it one of the oldest clinics I’ve included on this list. I looked into them after hearing they provide a wide range of periodontal treatments, like flap surgery, crown lengthening, and gingivectomy.

What stood out to me is that they can perform periodontal regeneration. This involves advanced methods like guided tissue regeneration and bone grafting to restore gum health, which isn’t something every clinic offers.

I also like how they cater to anxious patients. They use oral sedatives and laughing gas, and they even have anaesthetists available to provide intravenous sedation when necessary.

That said, their fees are generally higher than other periodontists in Adelaide. They also require patients to pay for treatments on the same day, which can feel less flexible for those who prefer different payment arrangements.

National Periodontics is another clinic I recommend for anyone who values experience. Their periodontist, Dr Arthur Drouganis, has over 35 years of practice and has published research in both national and international journals.

One of the best things about them is their use of modern treatment methods. For example, their pinhole technique for gum recession relies on small entry points rather than grafts to reposition gum tissue.

They also provide laser surgery, which removes infected gum tissue while keeping the healthy tissue intact. They can even manage complex autoimmune oral conditions like lichen planus and pemphigus, helping patients maintain quality of life.

However, it’s important to note that their specialised treatments are quite pricey. And since Dr Drouganis is the only periodontist, appointments can be harder to secure due to high demand.

The lead periodontist, Dr Leo Lander, has close to 10 years of specialist experience. I like that he and his team cover a wide range of periodontal treatments, including gum grafting, wisdom teeth removal, and dental implants.

It’s also interesting that they provide more specialised procedures, such as sinus lifting, which is especially useful if you need implants in the upper jaw but lack enough bone height.

On the flip side, their business hours are inconsistent, which can make scheduling tricky. Their location in Modbury may also feel a bit far if you live in the southern suburbs.
