Keeping your gums healthy is easy with the best periodontists in Adelaide!

Qualifications and experience - We looked for periodontists who are recognised by the Dental Board of Australia and have at least three years of hands-on experience treating gum disease, implants, and advanced oral health issues.

Treatment standards - We considered how well each clinic delivers results, drawing on case outcomes and the techniques or technology they use to make procedures more effective and comfortable.

Accessibility - We evaluated whether these clinics are close to major roads and public transit stations and whether they offer flexible appointment times to help patients get care quickly.

Professionalism - We assessed how approachable the staff are and whether they always show up on time for their appointments. We also checked whether they respond to enquiries quickly.

Price fairness - We looked at whether their fees are reasonable given the periodontist’s experience, the quality of care, and whether these clinics provide flexible payment options.

I thought it was just a little gum irritation, but when my upper left gums swelled up, the pain was so bad I couldn’t sleep. Painkillers barely made a dent, and I started wondering if I’d ever get a decent night’s rest again.

My dentist didn’t mince words—“You need a periodontist”—and thankfully, I got in quickly. The specialist fixed me up, and suddenly life felt normal again, like I’d been handed back my pillow and peace of mind.

That whole ordeal made me realise how important it is to know who to call, so I’ve pulled together this guide to the best periodontists in Adelaide to help you.

Pasadena Dental and Implant Centre is a good option if you find yourself needing urgent care. They provide same-day services for emergencies and can even take patients after hours when the case is severe.

For gum health, they offer periodontal treatments such as flap surgery to clean infected pockets and root planing to remove plaque and tartar. They also provide dental implants, including the All-on-4 option for those who need a full set of teeth replaced.

Since periodontal treatments can be costly, it helps that they offer payment plans so patients can spread the fees into more manageable amounts. They also run promotions, including no-gap dental checkups for those with health insurance.

Unfortunately, their location isn’t ideal for residents in Adelaide’s northern suburbs. I also heard from some patients that they experienced rude behaviour from the staff.

Pros

  • Same-day emergency appointments
  • After-hours availability for urgent cases
  • All-on-4 dental implants offered
  • Offers flexible payment plans
  • Regularly runs promotions

Cons

  • Location less convenient for northern Adelaide residents
  • Some rude staff

I ended up at Melbourne Street Perio after my dentist suggested I see a specialist for the swelling in my upper left gums. The clinic opened in 2021 and is led by Dr Geoff Harvey, a periodontist with more than 10 years of experience.

In my case, Dr Harvey carried out a deep cleaning to remove the infection that had been causing the swelling. His work was quick and methodical, and the pain eased far sooner than I expected.

I found out he also offers specialised treatments such as soft tissue grafting, crown lengthening, and gingivectomy. But what I really appreciated was that the clinic has HICAPS, so I was able to claim my health fund rebate on the spot.

The few drawbacks are that bookings can only be made over the phone, and since it’s a small practice, appointment availability can sometimes be limited.

Pros

  • Lead periodontist has more than 10 years of experience
  • Wide range of periodontal treatments
  • Can provide ongoing periodontal maintenance
  • Has Health Industry Claims and Payments Service (HICAPS) on site
  • Central location

Cons

  • Small practice with limited appointment slots
  • Bookings only available by phone

Their friendliness and professionalism is great

“I’ve been seeing Dr Harvey for many years now and his work is fantastic. He is totally professional and his manner is so caring and down to earth. I highly recommend him and the team at Melbourne Street Perio as they are all very caring and their friendliness and professionalism is great.”

– Michelle Owen, Google Reviews

Dr Harvey is a lovely, capable, and efficient periodontist

“Dr Harvey is a lovely, capable, and efficient periodontist. I used to dread teeth cleans but I never feel pain with him (and I often do with dental hygienists). His admin staff are very friendly too. Overall great experience.”

Adelaide Periodontal & Implant Professionals was founded in 1991, making it one of the oldest clinics I’ve included on this list. I looked into them after hearing they provide a wide range of periodontal treatments, like flap surgery, crown lengthening, and gingivectomy.

What stood out to me is that they can perform periodontal regeneration. This involves advanced methods like guided tissue regeneration and bone grafting to restore gum health, which isn’t something every clinic offers.

I also like how they cater to anxious patients. They use oral sedatives and laughing gas, and they even have anaesthetists available to provide intravenous sedation when necessary.

That said, their fees are generally higher than other periodontists in Adelaide. They also require patients to pay for treatments on the same day, which can feel less flexible for those who prefer different payment arrangements.

Pros

  • More than 30 years of experience
  • Wide range of gum and implant treatments
  • Can do periodontal regeneration
  • Supportive care for anxious patients
  • Central location

Cons

  • Above-average fees
  • Payment expected on the same day of treatment

I felt no pain during or after

“Dr Rayner Goh is a wonderful, caring, and gentle practitioner. I was extremely nervous before my procedure but he was very reassuring and I felt no pain during or after. I would highly recommend him if you require periodontal services.”

– Gail French, Google Reviews

I didn’t even need to take any pain medication

“I recently had a dental implant with Dr Andre Bendyk who was absolutely amazing. I was feeling nervous before the procedure. Dr Andre Bendyk is amazing at what he does. I was surprised how quick the procedure was. He was very supportive and professional, and his team of professionals were very supportive. I had a really good experience, so good that I didn’t even need to take any pain medication. I am so grateful to Dr Andre Bendyk and the team at Adelaide Periodontal & Implant Professionals. I highly recommend them!”

National Periodontics is another clinic I recommend for anyone who values experience. Their periodontist, Dr Arthur Drouganis, has over 35 years of practice and has published research in both national and international journals.

One of the best things about them is their use of modern treatment methods. For example, their pinhole technique for gum recession relies on small entry points rather than grafts to reposition gum tissue.

They also provide laser surgery, which removes infected gum tissue while keeping the healthy tissue intact. They can even manage complex autoimmune oral conditions like lichen planus and pemphigus, helping patients maintain quality of life.

However, it’s important to note that their specialised treatments are quite pricey. And since Dr Drouganis is the only periodontist, appointments can be harder to secure due to high demand.

Pros

  • 35 years of experience
  • Offers advanced techniques like laser and pinhole surgery
  • Offers management of complex autoimmune oral conditions
  • After-hours emergency care available

Cons

  • Above-average fees
  • Only one periodontist

Very happy with the outcome

“Visited Dr Drouganis for an implant surgery. Highly professional service, very happy with the outcome. Thanks Dr Drouganis.”

– Liam Ibbetson, Google Reviews

Very professional practice and staff

“Very professional practice and staff. Dr Arthur Drouganis was very helpful and my implant surgery went perfectly. Highly recommend this practice to anyone.”

If you’d rather not go through the hassle of seeing a general dentist first, Adelaide Gum Doctor is worth a look. They don’t require a referral, so you can book an appointment yourself and get treated without delay.

The lead periodontist, Dr Leo Lander, has close to 10 years of specialist experience. I like that he and his team cover a wide range of periodontal treatments, including gum grafting, wisdom teeth removal, and dental implants.

It’s also interesting that they provide more specialised procedures, such as sinus lifting, which is especially useful if you need implants in the upper jaw but lack enough bone height.

On the flip side, their business hours are inconsistent, which can make scheduling tricky. Their location in Modbury may also feel a bit far if you live in the southern suburbs.

Pros

  • Lead periodontist has almost 10 years of experience
  • No referral needed
  • Wide range of periodontal treatments
  • Sinus lifting available for complex implant cases

Cons

  • Inconsistent operating hours
  • Location less convenient for southern Adelaide residents

I am forever grateful for the excellent care I received

“Big thank you to Dr Leo Lander and his amazing team for my wisdom teeth extraction. During the procedure I didn’t feel any needles or pain itself. (In fact, I was even able to crack jokes in the middle of it!) Dr. Lander is one of the most professional dentists I’ve had the pleasure to work with last year, and I am forever grateful for the excellent care I received.”

– Vladislava Sibakova, Google Reviews

No pain and no issues

“The quickest and most effective wisdom tooth extraction I’ve ever had. No pain and no issues. Dr Leo Lander is a real professional! Thanks all!”
