5 Best Midwives in Adelaide Providing Excellent Care for Mothers-to-Be

  • Quality of care - Based on patient feedback, we assessed whether the midwife offers responsive communication, addresses specific concerns, and provides thorough pre and postnatal check-ups.
  • Range of services - Aside from childbirth assistance, they should also educate mothers about the stages of pregnancy, provide mental health advice, and more.
  • Fairness of fees - Their fees should be reasonable considering the number of appointments and the complexity of the case.
  • Accessibility - They should be easy to contact to ensure that emergencies can be catered to.

Accompanying my sister through her pregnancy was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. From the early days of her baby bump to the final stages of her pregnancy, I witnessed her transformation and supported her as best I could.

However, knowing it was her first time, I realized we needed professional help. It’s why we sought out a knowledgeable, compassionate midwife who guided my sister every step of the way, providing the expert care she needed.

If you’re expecting, entrust your childbirth to the best. Find the top midwives in Adelaide here.

Kind, patient, and warm

“I ended up on Ros’s page quite by accident, while I was enquiring about home birthing services, and despite Ros not being a home birth midwife she was sincere and took her time to answer all the questions that I had- leading me to an impressive list of helpful contacts!

Thank you so much Ros, for your kind, patient and warm disposition. Your dedication and love for your work was truly evident during our chat.

If we ever get blessed with another baby, I hope to one day cross paths with you in one way or another (as you provide a lot of other beneficial midwifery services).”

Incredibly supportive

“Ros has been an incredibly supportive ally during the messy circumstances of my daughter’s birth: before, during and after. She bent over backwards with great attention to detail to help make everything as easy and smooth as possible, with great care towards emotional support. I highly recommend her.”

Adelaide Lactation Consultant offers good infant sleep and lactation advice and support. In addition, they’re also Medicare-accredited, and they process transactions availing this fast.

It is operated by Megan who has over 30 years of experience in midwifery. She has extensive qualifications, including being a registered nurse and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

She’s also notable for providing a highly useful TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) machine that can relieve pregnancy pains through electrical nerve stimulation. She also rents birth slings and teaches how to use them well.

Her style is highly informative yet calm and compassionate. She also has many available appointment slots.

A notable downside, however, is that she doesn’t provide labor assistance, instead offering hospital referral and post-natal care. Also, some found her hypnobirthing classes pricey.

Pros

  • Calm and compassionate
  • Has many appointment slots
  • Midwife has over 30 years of experience
  • Rents TENS machines

Cons

  • No labor assistance
  • Hypnobirthing classes are pricey

Calm, kind and lovely person

“Megan is not only a calm, kind and lovely person, she is incredible at what she does! I was beside myself trying to figure out breastfeeding with my baby and with one session with Megan, my baby latched and had a beautiful feed. The plan that is given after consultation is highly detailed and packed full of useful information to help you thrive with breastfeeding. Couldn’t fault anything about my experience with Megan and also couldn’t thank her enough!!! Would highly recommend getting in contact with her if you have any issues whatsoever! – Amazing!”

Will recommend her without any hesitation

“I’ve seen Megan for my three children and will recommend her without any hesitation. She is super lovely and I like the convenience of in-home consultations. In particular the more children you have the harder it is to leave the house for appointments. We had big breastfeeding issues with the firstborn and Megan helped diagnose and explain the tongue and lip tie he had. He was breastfed successfully until 15 months. Our second child didn’t have major issues but I saw Megan because I trusted her and wanted the feeding to start on the right path. We’ve now seen Megan for our third child and her advice has made feeding so much easier! You would think that by the third time you’ve got all the knowledge you need but I’ll admit it was super helpful again seeing Megan.”

Adelaide Midwives specializes in providing a comprehensive care package starting in the earliest stages of pregnancy down to six weeks after birth.

The center is led by Sue Macfarlan who has over 35 years in midwifery and who is also a registered nurse.

They’re able to meet most clients’ needs and preferences by having many birthing options (hypnobirthing, water birthing, natural, and high-risk) and having the option to have a student midwife for additional support.

It’s also great that they have both a modest meeting room in St. Vincent St. and a clinical room in the UniSA midwifery clinic, giving clients more options for comfortable consultations.

They also process referrals to more health practitioners (if needed) and Medicare rebates fast.

That said, their appointment slots are limited. Also, they take a couple of days to respond to their website contact form.

Pros

  • Provides early pregnancy to post-birthing care package
  • Head midwife has over 35 years of experience
  • Many birthing options
  • Fast processing of referrals and rebates

Cons

  • Limited appointment slots
  • Takes a couple of days to respond to website contact form

Took the hassle out of needing to go to the doctors

“Having a private midwife was fantastic. I wanted to have the same midwife and be able to build a relationship with them which definitely happened with Sue. All appointments post natal were in the comfort of my own home and if I needed any scripts Sue was able to provide them, this took the hassle out of needing to go to the doctors.”

Personable, knowledgeable and nurturing

“Adelaide midwives were recommended to me by a friend who had used this service. The care I received from the first interaction with Sue was personable, knowledgeable and nurturing. Having the same midwife for all appointments and for the delivery of my baby is important to me.”

The center is led by Hannah whose philosophy is to provide holistic fertility care. Their services are extensive, ranging from conception advice to postnatal care.

Their large team allows them to have many appointment schedules. In addition, their range of services is broad, including hypnobirthing courses (both group and solo), lactation consultation, baby/toddler sleep support, and more.

Compared to other midwives, however, their services are pricey. They’ve also received complaints for sometimes being late to teleconsultation appointments.

Cons

Invaluable expertise

“Hiring private midwife Hannah was one of the best decisions my husband and I made during our pregnancy journey. Her expertise in pregnancy, labor, hypnobirthing, and birth plans was invaluable. Through her online course and one-on-one sessions, she transformed our apprehensions into confidence, ensuring we were well-educated and clear-headed as we approached labor.”

Exceptional support and guidance

“I am so thankful I found Hannah. As an anxious first time mama, it was so important to me to build my “community” and have lots of support. She has been such an important part of my postnatal journey. Her support and guidance has been exceptional and her knowledge of babies/ women and breastfeeding is second to none. Thank you for looking after us so well.”

Amazing staff

“Couldn’t have had a better experience at this hospital with the birth of our son just over a year ago. I can’t believe I forgot to leave a nice review. The nurses, midwives and doctors were all amazing. Our delivery room overlooked the park. We felt very safe and cared for there. Thanks to all the amazing staff.”
